Things to remember

Because of the latest changes in student visa legislation, switching course is now even more difficult. As per the guidelines, whether you can change your course or not depends on three things.

  • The course itself that you are studying.
  • The duration for which you have learned this course so far.
  • Your current visa.

You can either change your course in the same institute or enroll in a different course and university altogether. If you’re unsure what to do, please don’t hesitate to contact HS Consultants Education & Migration.

Your primary course

Your primary course is the head course you have taken admission in for studying. In simple words, it is the highest AQF level course your Australian visa was approved. If you have enrolled yourself in a course bundle, it is the highest degree level for which your student visa was granted.

For example, if you are learning Certificate III and IV in Commercial Cookery and Diploma of Hospitality, your primary course is the Diploma of Hospitality.

Leaving your primary course

To exit from your primary course, you must keep these things in mind.

  • To take admission in a new course, you must first need a release from your present educational institute.
  • You cannot obtain a new CoE if you don’t have leave permission from your current educational organization.
  • You can appeal to external authorities like State/Territory Ombudsman, Overseas Student Ombudsman, etc.
  • If you have studied for under six months and your provider won’t let you leave, you cannot enroll in a new course.

However, there are two cases here.

You completed six months: If you have studied for at least six months, changing your course will be easier, as there are higher chances that your educational institute will give you a letter of release. So overall, the procedure becomes simpler if you study for at least six months.

You didn’t complete six months: Unfortunately,it is complicated to change course if youhaven’t studied for the initial six months. Now you must contact your institute to get a letter of release, which you can only get after an offer letter from another university.

Is a new student visa required?

Please note that you can only switch to a course in the same or higher educational level as your present primary degree, meaning that you cannot change from a bachelor’s degree to a vocational one. Additionally, if you wish to change your course, you will require two things.
