Canada Study Permit Guide 101: The Essentials

Canada is a famous country among international students for studying abroad. Visa overview

The Canadian Study Permit is a document that the Canadian government issues, allowing overseas students to learn at a designated learning institute in Canada. Most global students require a Study Permit to study in Canada. Assure you have all the documents you need before applying. It is advisable to apply before entering Canada.

Please note: it is not a student visa, you cannot enter Canada with it, and you require a visitor visa or an eTA to enter Canada. However, the officials will issue you one of the two if your Study Permit is approved.

Staying duration

A Canadian Study Permit is commonly valid for the length of your course with an additional 90 days. These extra days give you enough time to extend your visa or scheduled to leave Canada after completing your studies. However, the following three conditions can change the duration of your Study Permit.

If you are taking prerequisite courses: If the institute asks you to take other courses before it enrolls you in the primary degree, your Study Permit will be legal for the length of those programs with an additional year. When you get admitted into the main course, you must expand your Study Permit.  

If you’ll complete your studies after your Study Permit expires: If you don’t complete your degree before the due date on your Permit, you must apply to expand your Permit, or you will be forced to exit Canada.

If you complete your course before your Study Permit expires: If you finish your degree early, your study document will stop being valid 90 days after you complete your studies, regardless of the date printed on it. Your institute will notify you of the date you have completed your studies by completion letter, transcript, degree, or diploma. You must submit proof of the date your school notifies you or the date you receive your degree. If you don’t have evidence, the officials will use the earliest issue date on the document and may confirm it with your institute.  

Who can apply?

You can study in Canada if you meet the following requirements.

• You are admitted to a designated learning institution in Canada, aka DLI. If you are arriving from outside Canada to study as an overseas learner, your DLI must be on the DLIs list with an approved COVID-19 readiness plan.
• You must have evidence that you have the required funds to pay for your tuition fees, staying costs, and return transportation.  
• You must obey Canadian law, have no criminal data, and submit a police certificate. (if asked)
• You must be fit and healthy and submit a medical exam. (if needed)
• You must show evidence to the authorities that you will leave Canada when your visa expires.
